Vision of the Department

The Postgraduate Course in English at National College, Basavanagudi, Bangalore focuses on examining major literary works that provide a unique perspective on human experience and society. Emphasis is placed on developing close reading and interpretation skills through the analysis of literary texts. Special attention is given to relations between thematic content and formal properties. Readings include key works of poetry, drama, fiction, and creative nonfiction from a range of historical moments and cultural contexts.

Brief history of the department

The Department was established in September 2014 and has been successful in attracting students from the colleges that are nearby. Our student strength has been steadily improving. In addition to the syllabus, the department has encouraged students to begin a club. The En-Lit (as the club is known) is a students’ initiative started in 2017 under the guidance of the PG Department of English in the spirit of opening opportunities for the students. The motto of the club is to give the students of English a platform to develop academic skills and participate in fun filled learning.

Major Topics Taught

In the first and second semesters the students are introduced to European Literatures, British Literature, India Studies,World Writing & English Language Education. In the third and fourth semesters the focus is on more recent trends in literary studies like Critical Theory, Postcolonial Studies, Gender Studies & Research Methods.
